The 207 is proof that Peugeot is still a master when it comes to small cars. It's roomy, well equipped, attractively styled and comes with strong petrol and diesel engines. Peugeot's 207 is also good to drive with decent steering and a comfortable ride. As you'd expect, the 207 is available with a selection of engines. Numerous 1.4-litre and 1.6-litre engines are on offer, with both diesel and petrol versions available to buyers. All are relatively frugal and shouldn't break the bank when it comes to running costs. The diesel engines are particularly beneficial for those who commute long distances each year. Buyers of the 207 hatchback can also pick between three- and five-door variants, with the five-door versions being more practical for those who frequently carry passengers. With other small hatches in the range Peugeot, it seems, has a small car for all budgets. In addition to a top five-star Euro NCAP crash-test rating, the Peugeot 207 safety portfolio includes dual front, side and curtain airbags (with the exception of the entry Urban model), five three-point seatbelts, two Isofix childseat anchor points and strong side and front impact protection. Key security features include remote central locking with deadlocks, automatic locking once the car reaches 6mph and an immobiliser. The attractive dash is clear and easy-to-use while the driving position is excellent, with a highly adjustable driver's seat and a steering wheel that adjusts for height and reach (which isn't the case on the 206). However, although improved over the 206, the pedals are too close together. Much attention has been paid to the look of the instrument dials, which are chrome ringed while a large amount of glass means all-round visibility is excellent and gives a pleasant and airy feel - something that can be increased with the optional Panoramic extra-large sunroof. The 207 has a light and attractive cabin with some quality materials and a modern design. The controls are clearly laid out but the stereo switches are a little fiddly. Peugeot 207 running costs are fairly low. The diesel engines return strong fuel economy and Peugeot generally offers good value-for-money parts and servicing. Depreciation is likely to track just below the market leaders, while insurance groups are competitive. The 207 performs very well on the eco front. With an average of 141g/km CO2 across the line-up, Peugeot 207 emissions are fairly low for a small hatch. Eco-conscious buyers should consider the 1.4-litre HDi, which is one of the greenest models in the range, returning 64mpg and emitting 117g/km of CO2, meaning road tax is cheap. In June 2010 Peugeot added a 112bhp 1.6-litre HDi in Sport trim to its line-up.
