The MINI, launched in 2001, introduced a whole new generation to the iconic model. Retro was all the rage and the funky hatchback took full advantage with its cheeky looks and classic interior both inspired by the original. The second generation model builds on this formula and although it may not look very different, comes with better engines along with improved safety and comfort. It's still great to drive with go-kart like handling and good performance - even from the entry level First model. The MINI has front, side and head airbags as standard and achieved the maximum five star crash rating for occupant protection in official Euro NCAP tests. The MINI uses some of the characteristic features of the original model combined with modern touches. The large central speedo first catches the eye - if you opt for sat nav this is where the map screen sits while the pod rev counter is the only dial in front the of the driver. The driving position is excellent and thanks to reach and rake adjustment in the steering it's easy to get comfortable behind the wheel. There is also a dashboard slot for the keyfob and a start button next to it adding to the upmarket feel. All the materials used are excellent and build quality is top notch. The MINI is very eco-friendly and easy on the environment. With an average of 140g/km CO2 across the model line-up (including automatic gearboxes models), its emissions are good for a small car. Eco-conscious buyers should consider the Cooper D which is one of the greenest models in the range and returns 72mpg.. There is also a diesel version - the Cooper D - which uses a 110bhp 1.6-litre turbodiesel. It isn't much slower in a sprint than the Cooper and has the benefit of extra mid-range performance, useful when overtaking. It's also incredibly economical, averaging an astonishing 72mpg while low emission ensure cheap road tax - as a result it's our pick of the range. Cars from late 2007 are fitted with Efficient Dynamics which helps save fuel and lower emissions thanks to systems such as engine stop/start. One of the key strengths of the MINI has always been it's excellent handling and the second generation car continues that tradition. It has a real go-kart like feel with incredibly responsive steering and a low-slung driving position. Body roll is kept well in check too helped by new rear suspension which has been upgraded compared to its predecessor. The MINI is fitted with electric power steering and although this often comes at the expense of driver involvement, this isn't the case here. Point the car at a corner and it will track precisely all the way round, with a great deal of feedback through the steering, while the tyres grip tenaciously at seemingly unlikely speeds.
