PROS Nippy around town, spacious, excellent visibility, good value The Venga is Kia's first real serious attempt in making a small and practical people-carrier. With its high roofline and short body it offers an alternative to the likes of the Renault Grand Modus and Citroen C3 Picasso. As well as being just as practical as the French manufacturers' efforts, it is reasonable to drive and it makes perfect sense as a city runabout. In official crash tests by Euro NCAP, the Venga was awarded four stars out of five although it wasn't without its problems. During the frontal impact tests, the driver's seatbelt was partially cut by the lower seat rail - a serious flaw. Kia acted quickly to provide a solution and recalled all the cars affected, fitting a protective sleeve. All new cars have this fitted at the factory, but if your car is an early model then it's worth checking that the work has been carried out. After being re-tested by Euro NCAP the Venga was given a full five stars for safety. Basic boot space is an impressive 440 litres while a storage compartment underneath the boot floor extends this further to a maximum of 570 litres with the rear seats in place. The rears seats slide backwards and forwards in order to further increase boot space, but it does cut down on rear passengers' legroom. Dropping the rear seats is simple and done with the pull of a lever. They also fold down completely flat bringing the total volume available in the rear to 1,253 litres. The high seating position helps to enhance the good visibility already offered by the large windscreen and extra glass in the car's A-pillars, but if you like a low-slung position then the Venga's not for you. The central console is well laid out and easy to use although some of the materials look and feel cheap as well as being a little dull. The diesel is too noisy, so the best options are the petrol versions. Engine and wind noise is well contained while road noise only becomes intrusive on poorer surfaces. Passengers get plenty of headroom in the front and the rear and rear passengers also get a decent amount of legroom with enough room for two adults to sit comfortably. There's more than enough room for three children, even on longer journeys.
