The Ford Fiesta has become one of just a handful of household names in the motoring world. That doesn't necessarily mean it's the best, but it is one of the most recognisable and popular - in fact it has become a byword for 'small car' and almost a brand in its own right. Inside there's a decent-sized glovebox and a few storage areas for odds and ends.There's great visibility through the deep front screen and the driving position is good too. The seat is adjustable on most models, as is steering wheel tilt adjustment (though reach adjustment is rapidly becoming the norm on newer rivals). The gear lever is mounted high-up making it easy to use - especially around town. All the controls are well laid out and big buttons for the stereo and heating make using them on the move simple. A huge improvement over the previous Fiesta - the taller shape of this model lends itself to more head room plus legroom in the back is much improved. However it's still lacking in interior space when compared to other small such as the Toyota Yaris, Renault Clio and Fiat Grande Punto. Road and wind noise are kept to a minimum, but the sound of the engine can often be quite invasive. The diesel does better, however and is a smart choice for motorway driving.The Fiesta is cost effective to run and even better if you buy one used. Ford parts and servicing are good value for money, while fuel and insurance compare well to rivals. As with most cars, depreciation is the biggest cost, but the Fiesta is one of the better performers in this class. The Fiesta performs very well on the eco front. With an average of 142g/km CO2 across the range, its emissions are comparably low for a super mini hatchback. Eco-conscious buyers should consider the 1.4-litre diesel, which is one of the greenest models in the range. The Fiesta is proving to be reliable in the main with occasional niggles to trouble the unlucky.
