There's no doubting the inherent safety of the BMW 3 Series Saloon, but it's also worth noting that it is an ageing design that gained its five-star Euro NCAP crash test rating back in 2012. That said, BMW is an advanced engineering company and in the years since it was introduced the 3 Series has been made available with much of the newer safety tech the firm has introduced. In addition to the usual raft of airbags and electronic stability software, all 3 Series Saloons come with full LED lights front and rear that switch on automatically, rain-sensing windscreen wipers, rear parking sensors and run-flat tyres for added stability if a puncture occurs.BMW has bestowed the 3 Series Saloon with one of the most driver-focused cabins around, with the centre console angled much more acutely towards the driver than its predecessor was. It's intuitive to use, with logically arranged – and pleasing to use – switchgear, including the iDrive multimedia controller with its rotary dial. Contemporary iDrive systems are much easier to navigate than earlier versions introduced back in 2002, with additional shortcut buttons around the central knob and logical menus displayed on the multimedia screen that stands proud of the dashboard.While the interior soft-touch plastics are of a high quality – and the dashboard's got an interesting oblique styling theme to it – it somehow conspires to not feel as classy as the interiors of the Audi A4 and Mercedes-Benz C-Class do. There's a wide palette of colours available for the 3 Series Saloon's interior plastic mouldings, including a variety of trim appliques in wood, metal and textured plastics.
